Captain Gregory Sampson is the Commanding Officer of the USS Destiny, a starship stranded in the Triangulum Galaxy.
Background
Childhood
Gregory Sampson was born on March 15th, 2511 on the planet Rygel VII, a Federation colony world on the outer edges of Federation Space. Sampson had no relatives and when he was six years old, his parents died in a shuttle accident landing him in an orphanage. The only memory he has of his parents, is a small holophoto of them which he keeps in his pocket at all times.
At age 8, Gregory was abused by one of the men in charge of the orphanage, after which time he ran away. For a year, Gregory was living on the street, having to steal for food.
On Stardate 122827.9, the Federation starship USS Adelaide-J arrived at Rygel VII, conducting diplomatic negotiations with the planet. Gregory attempted to pickpocket a Starfleet Officer who arrived on the planet. That officer turned out to be Commander Leeya T'Laas, the half-human half-vulcan Executive Officer of the Federation Starship in orbit. The Commander took pity on him and, as she was unable to bear children herself, adopted him as her own.
Gregory spent the rest of his childhood aboard the Adelaide under T'Laas's tuteledge. He was a very hard child to control, always becoming angry and frustrated; pushing T'Laas to her limits. The half-Vulcan eventually was able to teach Gregory a mild form of emotion suppression techniques, giving the cool, logical persona he has kept to this day. T'Laas became the only real parent figure in Sampson's life, which encouraged him to join Starfleet.
Starfleet Academy
Gregory failed in his first two attempts to gain entrance to the Acadamy and almost gave up when finally, after his third try, he was succesfully admitted. Sampson was an average student at the Academy, he excelled in history, did well in military tactics and good decent marks in piloting. The sciences, while he found them fascinating, were almost beyond his comprehension. He only barely passed the chemistry finals, with his Acadamy friend Lon Tunor, a Betazoid.
Gregory wasn't an especially athletic person, however he excelled at martial arts. Winning two championships in his years at the Academy, accomplishments he is very proud of.
First Starfleet Career:
Sampson had a tumultuous early career, frequently clashing with superior officers. On his third ship posting, he finally met a superior he liked: Captain Stelam Cretak, a Romulan. The two got along very well and served together for a long time. Sampson was Cretak's Tactical officer for ten years, earning multiple commendations for bravery and fortitude in the line of duty. Sampson steadily rose through the ranks until he finally made Captain at age 41.
On his first command, however, he was framed for the murder of a Federation dignitary and was, due to his relationship with the now Admiral Cretak, sentenced to Exile from Federation space.

Exile Years
Sampson had spent most of his adult life in Starfleet and now, having that all torn away from him, he was almost lost. Sampson took to drink and when he was drinking in a bar on a planet on the edge fo Federation space, he met up with a man name Michael Hogan, a disgruntled former starfleet officer who was dishonerably discharged for insubordination. The two men became fast friends and bought themselves a ship, an old Oberth-Class Tug.
After getting themselves a crew of five, they took jobs as the came, not worrying about their being illegal or not. During many of their escapades, they ran into Starfleet though, luckily, never anyone they knew.
After three years in exile, it was discovered who the true murderer of the Federation dignitary was, and Sampson was reinstated to Starfleet at the rank of Captain
Second Starfleet Career
Sampson was chosen to captain the new, state of the art ship USS Destiny, a Destiny class starship which carried an experimental Gravity Drive. During field tests of the drive, the ship encountered an ion storm which interfered with the drive, sending the ship millions of light years away, into the Triangulum Galaxy.
